The Girls of Ohmer
Chapter 1 Vay
Long ago, before time remembered, there lived a little girl named Vay.
Vay was a strange and tempermental little thing. One minute she would be happy as a bird, dancing and singing around the house, a joy to behold. Moments later she could be as angry as a wounded pirate, stomping and grumping around the house, a menace to be avoided.
You see, vay was the smallest of the Ohmer girls, but she didn't want to be. This caused her a lot of grumpiness, as she could not figure out how to become bigger than her sisters. The bigger she got, the bigger they got! It was impossible to catch up much less get ahead. She felt like it was a lost cause.
Then one day she found out that her mommy was going to have another baby. Vay was in a wonderful mood, dancing and singing for nine whole months. The thought of no longer being the littlest Ohmer girl was enough to keep her happy all the time. With a little sister starting out so far behind, there was no chance it would catch up!
She sang a new song" I may not be the biggest, but I won't be the littlest either either either eeee iiiiii eeee iiiii oooooooooo"
When the new baby finally came, it was a perfect little baby boy.
Vay was devastated. All of her joy crashed to the ground with a sickening thud. E I E I "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" She screamed"A BOY! AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH! HOW CAN THIS BEEEEEEEE?" Then she let out a howling screech that shook the house in hurricane winds. The wallpaper started peeling off the walls. Plates and cups were clattering in the cupboards and the candles, though unlit, began to melt.
Vay screamed until her sisters came running into the room. They stuffed wads of their own hair into their ears and then covered Vay with a thick blanket. That didn't help, so Erica, the oldest ran to the kitchen. In the blink of an eye she returned with a large heavy cook pot which she set on top of the screaming little Vay. Then she held it down tight.
The pot and the blanket made little difference. When the girls pulled the hair out of their ears the sound was still deafening.
Amid the screams and shouts coming from under the pot, Erika looked at her sister and shouted " whats wrong with Vay?"
Her sister replied" I'm not sure, but we better think of something before the whole house comes down"
Which was indeed something to worry about. Vay had such a loud piercing scream that the whole house had begun to shake and crack. Nails were pulling themselves out of the wood and window panes were starting to vibrate and shatter.
"You better bear up!" Erica yelled.
Her sister, knowing it was the only choice, stepped back from the cook pot. She braced her feet on the floor and flexed her little biceps curling her arms in like a bodybuilder and tightening into a ball. She looked up and winked at Erica, giving the signal to lift the pot.
Just as Erika pulled the heavy pot up and Vays yell became a terrible roar, there was a blinding flash of light coming from the middle sisters heart. The light encompassed everything in a warm sparkly glow that quickly settled to the floor like pixie dust. The air smelled of cinnimon and honeysuckle as a calm fell over the room.
There in the middle of the room sat the cutest cuddliest little brown bear in creation.
Vay squealed in delight as she launched herself at the bear and tackled it amidst giggles and tickles. The bear laughed in short grumbling chuffs rolling across the floor with vays arms wrapped tightly around it. Vay was lauging and saying " wuv you beaya wuv yoo"
Erika smiled to herself. Being the oldest made her the leader, and she always knew how to fix a problem, quick, fast, and in a hurry. " Way to go bear!" She shouted to her younger sister.
At that the bear stopped rolling stared at Erica and said in a perfectly sweet, perfectly perturbed, little voice "That's bear dog vampire!"
She was so insistant over the use of her full name because she was in fact a bear, a dog and a vampire, all in one. Most of the time disguised as a little girl. A little Ohmer girl. But not the littlest, that honorable place belonged vay no matter how much she despised it.
